Story behind Photos
An old legend says that whenever a sailor drowns at sea, mermaids would cry. Their tears are the sea glass that washes up on the beaches of the world. Seaglass is a man-made glass, which has been tumbling in salt water for countless years to produce its frosted appearance and smooth edges. Seaglass always interested me but became an addiction after visiting and finding it on small islands along the coast of Maine. Now a day is often planned around the low tide and the search for ocean treasures. Looking for seaglass is like a form of meditation: enjoying the sun, listening to the waves and having my mind focused on what work of art the sea will give up to my scrutiny.
Seaglass — Ben’s Gifts 06 07
On my first summer at the island I was made less lonely by a family who lived down the road apiece, who showed me warmth and hospitality. Learning I was collecting seaglass, young Ben began to search the beaches to gather these jewels from the sea. On my visits he would gift his latest finds to me or quietly leave some seaglass on my doorstep for a nice surprise. One afternoon I was amazed by what Ben had collected for me and carefully displayed on the family picnic table. As I started to gather them up, I was struck by the primary colors juxtaposed with the weathered red of the table so quickly reached for my camera.
